National Girl Gamer does Dragon Con: Tips and tricks to a successful Con

Dragon Con is one of the most entertaining events of the sci fi convention circuit.  The South knows how to through a party!  Your Video Game Vixen may have been there to work but that doesn’t mean a girl didn’t have some fun.  Mixing it up with the celebs was great fun.  Strolling around the Walk of Fame just to see which stars didn’t have lines and then stopping to chat was very successful.  Here’s just a few tidbits to enjoy as you live life vicariously:

  • Kristin Bauer (Pam, True Blood) is sweet as can be, nothing like her alter ego Pam.  Also, she is very skinny!
  • Joe Manganiello (Alcide, True Blood) is just worthy of staring at but he has a wicked sense of humor, too. Good God is he huge!
  • Nicholas Brendon (Xander, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) gives amazing hugs and he smells like candy! Mmm, mmm.
  • James Marsters (Spike, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) is quieter than you would think but so beautiful and sweet.  Also, during the photo op he says “You are the same size as Sarah Gellar, I love it.”  Yum!  Doesn’t that make us the perfect fit, then?
  • Erin Gray (Col. Wilma Deering, Buck Roger in the 25th Century) is beautiful and she liked my corset.
  • Beau Bridges (Major Landry, Stargate SG-1) is so polite and interesting.
  • Joel Gretch (V, 4400) is so handsome and funny.  As I walked up he says “Where have you been all day?”  Answering him with standing in line for photo ops was enough to keep him chatting about how his line is short so no waiting.  You people don’t know what you were missing, he’s amazing.
  • Tahmoh Penikett (Helo, Battlestar Galactica) is to die for and a pleasure to talk to.  Another yum moment!
  • Richard Hatch (Apollo,Tom Zarek, Battlestar Galactica) is polite, talkative, and handsome.  He took an interest in how long my husband and I have been together and thought I was in my 20s.  Love him!  Also, later that night he stopped to chat with us in one of the panel lines.
  • Louis Ferreira (Colonel Young, Stargate Universe) so nice and is easy on the eyes.  Walking between the hotels he reprimanded this Diva on wearing heels to a convention!  Seriously? A true diva never leaves home in flats!  At least not one that is under five feet.

Dragon Con is a wonderful place to express you inner geek and to enjoy the universal appeal of star gazing! There are, however, a few tricks to keeping your Dragon Con weekend successful so that when you play your Dragon Con 2012 trip you will be able to enjoy it to the fullest.

  • Choose a hotel close by so that you are within walking distance of all the fun
  • Download the Dragon Con app for your phone.  The calendar of events if much easier to decipher than the 128 page pocket itinerary
  • When choosing your events, panels, contest, and meals be sure to have a backup plan for when they are packed full.
  • Have backups for your backups
  • Make time to walk through the Walk of Fame.  The celebrities are super nice and fun to talk to
  • In the Walk of Fame some of your favorite stars will take candid shots (they may be free or they may charge). It never hurts to ask.
  • There will be photo ops (these can get costly) with most of your favorite celebs.
  • If you want to attend a popular panel, get there early. Not an hour early but earlier.  However, don’t leave just because the line looks full.  There may still be room after all the suckers in line get into the room
  • If you do get into a full panel, walk around a bit to see if there is closer seating
  • If you plan to attend the parade, get there early.  If you want rail seating on one of the overlooking balconies get there way early.  This Diva was at her table at 6:30 in the a.m. to reserve a table top for four.  Best seats in the house!
  • Some of the events will be lame.  Feel free to get up and leave.  This will make you happier and will allow the fan outside a seat in on the lack of action.
  • Shower people!  Especially if you have spent the day in costume because you stink!

Keeping these tips in mind will make whatever Con you attend a much more pleasant experience for you and for others.  Be sure to start planning now for Dragon Con 2012, particularly if you are going to make a new costume!
