The winner was Ashley Howard of Winter Springs, FL for her edible gingerbread masterpiece: "There Was an Old Woman who Lived in a Shoe" on December 16th.

"featured fully furnished rooms, a gum-paste railing, and a tiny claw-footed bathtub filled with candy bubbles." The main challenge: the shoe has no seams; it's one solid piece.
Although Howard won first prize, she and the other winners--second place winner Heather Lewis of Austell Georgia, and the third place duo Barbara Evans and Mary Jo Dowling of Edlestein, Illinois--all have their sugary works of art on display at the Grove Park Inn through New Year's Day 2012.
What does the National Gingerbread House Competition mean for the city of Fort Lauderdale, FL, home of the Edible Snowmen display at the Fort Lauderdale Beach Marriott on 3030 Holiday Drive?
It means that the snowmen, Christmas trees and reported 600 pounds of chocolate don't exactly compare to the winning shoe, second place gingerbread steamer trunk filled with ornaments or third place horse and carriage in snowy confection.
Neither does it compare to what seems to be the largest dessert display of the 2011 holiday season: a 16-foot tall Gingerbread Hut at Kahler Grand Hotel in Minnesota. According to the folks at One News Page, it's made with 400 shingles, 800+ pounds of flour and 3,600 gingerbread bricks.
