National Geographic Kids launches photo contest for young shutterbugs

National Geographic Kids, the award-winning children’s magazine that explores our world with multi-topic, photo-driven content geared for the six to 14 year old reader, has just launched their National Geographic International Photography Contest 2009 for Kids.

The contest is open to children in the United States, Canada and internationally who are between the ages of six and 14 years old as of November 2, 2009, which is the deadline for postmark on all contest submissions, with receipt of materials no later than November 9, 2009.

There are four photo categories to compete in: scenery; animals; people and humor. Every child who enters the contest may submit one photograph in each category.

The winning prize is a five day, four night trip to Washington, D.C., which includes a special visit to the National Geographic headquarters.

For further facts about the contest, visit this page, and to download official entry forms, click here.

If your child needs some guidance or inspiration, be sure to check out National Geographic Kids “Photography 101: Tips From the Pros,” the winning photos from the 2008 contest , and some very unique bug photos or even a peek at an entertaining interactive page on the grown-up National Geographic website, which shows the art of the mimic.

And, just in case your child’s interest and strengths tend more toward the written word rather than the visual image, National Geographic Kids and Subway are also running the “Taste for Adventure” essay contest with an awesome prize of a trip to Alaska for a family of four.

Either way, no purchase is necessary, so get those pencils or cameras ready.

Way to go National Geo! You’re making a positive difference in the lives of children worldwide!

National Geographic Kids magazine has a circulation of 1.2 million young readers who have found that learning about the world around them is not only fun and entertaining but educationally empowering.
