Linda Perez, American Heart Association representative, presented the St. Lucie County School District an award at the January 22, 2013, school board meeting recognizing the district as a Fit-Friendly company. The national recognition is presented for organizations promoting health and wellness. Fit-Friendly Worksites are recognized by the American Heart Association as employers who go above and beyond when it comes to their employees' health. Workplace can:
•Provide walking routes
•Promote walking programs and tracking tools
•Allow staff to wear athletic shoes on designated "sneaker days"
According to the American Heart Association, adult Americans spend most of their waking hours at work. Many of those hours are spent sitting at a desk. This makes employees vulnerable to health risks associated with inactive lifestyles. Studies suggest that by starting a worksite physical activity program and promoting a culture of activity, you can:
•Increase productivity
•Reduce absenteeism
•Lower turnover
•Reduce healthcare costs
The American Heart Association’s fit-friendly program is a positive approach to employee well-being from a daily approach that solicits employee participation.
