In the wake of so many school shootings recently, the National Emergency Standard Cards and ICE app developed by Joseph A. Ekman of the About the Kids Foundation could come in very handy! When parents are nervously standing around waiting to hear if it is their child that the first responders have come across, they can feel assured that with the Card, or their phone, their child will get the very best of care because their personal data will be at the disposal of those that need it at the time!
About the Kids Foundation is a Silicon Valley Nonprofit organization that is continually moving ahead with the times – providing necessary essentials – even though the reasons may be unfortunate, the fact that the applications are available may make all the difference! As has been said, ‘It’s a horrible way for business to go good.’
The Ice Standard — Emergency Standard Card app was number 133 on December 14th on the Apple Apps Store list of free apps. Ironically this was the very same day that the Sandy Hook Elementary disaster occurred! It’s as if Ekman has some 6th sense as to what parents needs just before they need it!
Just four days after the disaster, the app hit number 70 on the list and 10 days after that (just two weeks after 20 children and six adults lost their lives), the app hit number 49! Remarkably the app popularity is thanks to word-of-mouth recommendations since About the Kids Foundation does not advertise otherwise.
The application and/or card make it possible for emergency responders and hospital personnel to view medical notes that you have stored on your iPhone or other iOS device. The data includes any medications taken, blood type, medical contacts, insurance data, any significant or chronic conditions, etc. The card is the backup check-and-balance for those just-in-case instances when your phone may be out of battery, has been damaged or lost. This system will make a positive out of a very negative situation!
Joseph Ekman’s next brainy undertaking for About the Kids is to aid lost, stolen or run-away children. It is a GPS application that is aiming to help parents keep track of their kids’ location. From the simple, “I forgot to call,” parents now have a place to begin their search.
About the Kids Foundation is progressive and Joseph Ekman is the primary reason. Everything that they do is for the benefit of children; from the simple to the complex, this organization is the reason that parents can breathe easy at night!
