Eating disorders have become more common and less obvious to detect. Most eating disorders start off by decreasing the amount of food intake, which is a common change when someone is dieting but then it becomes uncontrollable and that is the start of severe distress and concern about body weight or shape which signals an eating disorder.

In the United States more than 20 million women and 10 million men have had an eating disorder in their lifetime. The statistics are so shocking! According to the National Eating Disorder Association, young girls as early as 6 years old are extremely self-conscience about their body. More than 40% of elementary school children are terrified of getting fat and would change the way their body looks. The rate of developing cases on eating disorders has nearly tripled since the 1950’s.

In 2001, the (NEDA) National Eating Disorder Association merged together with the (EDAP) Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention and the (AABA) America Anorexia Bulimia Association to form the largest non-profit eating disorder advocacy by making February 23rd through March 1st National Eating Disorder Awareness Week.

Do you or someone you know struggle with food? Take the FREE screening and visit NEDA website to speak with a trained volunteer and get more information on prevention and awareness.
