Salvation Army's National Doughnut Day poster
Today is National Doughnut Day.
It was started in 1938 by the Salvation Army to raise funds for those struggling during the Great Depression and to commemorate the Salvation Army "lassies" who had made and distributed doughnuts and coffee to U.S. soldiers on the frontlines of World War I France.
Seventy-one years later, while we face another economic crisis, the Salvation Army continues to raise funds via National Doughnut Day held on the first Friday of June each year.
