Today is National Dog Day! Yes, today is all about honoring our faithful companion, the dog. According to the National Dog Day website, NDD is celebrated every year on Aug. 26 and is a great way to honor man’s best friend.

Celebrating its 10 year anniversary today, National Dog Day was founded back in 2004 by pet lifestyle expert and author Colleen Paige. Paige created this day to honor dogs across America and to give dog owners a chance to show even more appreciation than they normally do to their furry critters. It truly is a chance to give “every dog his day!”

Paige has come up with 20 different great ways to celebrate National Dog Day, with adopting a dog from your local shelter right at the top of the list. If you can’t adopt at this time that’s okay, there are still several great ways you can help out in today’s celebrations.

From volunteering at or making a donation to a local shelter, to buying you current dog a new toy or two, today is the perfect day for going the extra mile for your pooch. If you are interested in adopting but can’t make it to a shelter you can always check out petfinder.com.

Dogs are more than just animals to millions of pet owners; they are part of the family. If you are interested in helping out today in any way, shape or form you can do so by checking out the link above in how to do so. Also check out the National Dog Day Facebook page for other tips and ways to contribute.

Happy National Dog Day everyone!
