National Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day - look for healthy treats

With February 23 designated as National Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day, dogs everywhere are hoping to snag a few extra treats. It is important to look at the quality and amount of your dog's treats.

Many dogs are overweight and really don't need an extra biscuit or two. If you feel the need to indulge your dog, make sure you do an extra walk around the block to help wear those calories off. You can also substitute a piece of fresh carrot or a dried or cooked sweet potato. Both are healthy, low calorie alternatives.

If your dog can handle some biscuits, be sure to look at the ingredients. Some dogs are allergic to wheat or other ingredients. Avoid treats with unnecessary food dyes.

You can certainly make your own treats. Here are some options for great cookies to bake for your dog. Keep those cautions about possible food allergies in mind even if you make your own however. Often you can substitute for wheat flour if you need to. Another home made alternative is a canine cake from K9 Cakery.

There are excellent treats you can purchase as well. These use natural, healthy ingredients and are made in the USA. Companies include Annie's Pooch Pops, Planet Dog Eats and Spoil Me Rotten treats.
