Thursday is National Day of Prayer in Omaha, and the nation. This year's theme is 'One Voice, United in Prayer.' This is a very appropriate theme. The idea brings to mind the scripture from 2 Chronicles 7:14 that tells us "If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
Of course, prayer is always important, even vital to a Christ-like life and a peaceful walk with Christ. However, it should not be ignored that for these times we now live in, unified prayer is crucial! As we read, 'If two of you shall agree...it shall be done for them...For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them" (from Matt 18:19-20). Thus we see an example of the three-fold cord which is not easily broken. Corporate prayer, then, becomes just as important as individual prayer. Strength in numbers, as they say.
So, what sets these particular times apart from the rest? The times themselves are the answer. In each generation, there has been the belief that the end was near. However, now more than ever, we see scriptures that point to the end being fulfilled. Looking at Matthew 24:6, we see first that we are to expect wars, and rumors of wars. Our world has seen many wars, but not until the advent of social media have there been widespread RUMORS of wars - that never come to fruition.
Next, Jesus told us nation would rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there would be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes in diverse places (Matt. 24:7). Here again, we have always had international strife and uprisings, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes. However, it has only been in the past two years or so that we have seen earthquakes in DIVERSE places. Areas where quakes were few and far between, at best, have suddenly begun to rattle and shake with unprecedented frequency and strength.
Further, as Jesus explains in Matthew 24:8, this is just the beginning. The fighting and shaking and quaking and drought and epidemics are going to be compounded by the roaring of the seas and the waves, and the distress and perplexity of nations (Luke 21:25). People will become violent, loving only self, turning even on family (Matt. 10, 12); and ultimately, people will be in fear over the things occurring as the end nears (Luke 21:26).
In other words, if you think this is bad, you haven't seen anything yet! Now more than ever, we need to pray God will not turn His ears from us. We need Him in our midst. As a nation, we have worked feverishly to remove God from our society. Our laws, our values, and our actions have certainly not served to turn us away from wickedness and toward God. As a nation, we cannot expect our land to be healed from the ravages to come, if we do not gather, and agree, and pray - in humility and repentance.
As the end times are clearly upon us, we need to wake up and realize that God is exactly what we need, and the One we need most...NOW! We need to repent as individuals AND as a nation, before it is too late! Give your heart to God, then gather with others who have done the same, and then pray pray pray...today, tomorrow, and til the end. Those who endure to the end will be saved (Matt. 24:13).
In other words, get faith, keep the faith, and pray like there's no tomorrow!
