To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the National Cowboy Gathering this year, the National Cowboy Gathering will present poetry, music, fine western gear, films, workshops, dances and discussions focusing on encouraging the next generation and working together to ensure sustainability of the rural West’s occupational and artistic traditions, all through January 27 through February 1, 2014 in Elko, Nevada..
“Expressing the Rural West—Into the Future” is the theme this year celebrated with performances of poetry and music, thought-provoking films and fruitful discourse. The rural life challenges of the modern West will also be discussed, focusing especially on the next generation of cowboy artists presenting their work and discussing their brand of ranch life.
The National Cowboy Gathering will host seven stages at four different venues with more than 50 poets, musicians and musical groups from the U.S. and Canada. Musical lineup includes artists like Ian Tyson, Riders in the Sky, Michael Martin Murphey, Dave Stamey, Don Edwards, Jeffrey Broussard & the Creole Cowboys, Martha Scanlan, Caleb Klauder Country Band, and more.

The Western Folklife Center and the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering presented a YouTube video competition to poets ages 18 – 35, which ran from November 7 through December 19, 2013. The focus of the video poetry competition, titled “Expressing the Rural West: Poetry of the Next Generation,” was original poetry of rural life in the West.
The winner of the juried competition is Forest Mackey of New Mexico. He will perform at the Gathering this month.
The winner of the public contest was Randi Johnson.
