This upcoming Saturday, October 9, marks the 2010 National Costume Swap Day, promoted by KIWI Magazine, Green Halloween, and Swap.com.
According to Green Halloween, if just half of the children in the United States who celebrate Halloween swapped costumes instead of choosing new ones, annual landfill waste would be reduced by 6,250 tons. Reusing costumes in this manner means that fewer costumes need to be produced by manufacturers each year. In turn, fewer resources are needed to make those costumes (which are largely synthetic), less packaging is required, fewer costumes need to be transported from other countries or to your local store, and less waste will be produced, since so many consumers throw away their used Halloween costumes.
There are several, organized-by-state swap meets. Ohio does not have one, but we can take part in the online swap and take part in a greener Halloween.
