May 13, 2011

If you are looking for the perfect excuse to get off your seat, on your feet and get your dance on, you’re in luck! May 14th is National Chicken Dance Day, also referred to National Dance like a Chicken Day.

Chicken Dance History

Swiss accordion player Werner Thomas wrote Der Ententanz or the Duck Dance, in the 1950s. When he played the song at a restaurant in Switzerland, people would get up and dance to the melody. Their movements reminded him of ducks and chickens. A music publisher happened to stop by the restaurant and the song spread through Europe. While it took quite a while to catch on in America, the upbeat melody eventually hit the party and wedding scene and the rest, as they say, is history. Although the name of the tune changed a few times, the happy melody remained the same.

Chicken Dance Moves

The steps are pretty basic – just tweet, flap your arms, wiggle and clap. And don’t worry – if you don’t know all the moves, just ask your kids! Chances are pretty good they’ve done the dance a few times! Check out the video on the left of the page to see just how it's done.

Enjoy!
