Today is National Bologna Day! That’s right! Every year on October 24 is the day we can all celebrate bologna. Bologna has been a lunchtime favorite for sandwich lovers across the country for ages; and dates back through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Although bologna is considered an American sausage it is actually derived from ground pork sausage that contained cubes of lard for the city Bologna in Italy that Italians referred to as mortadella. This food product is spelled “bologna” and has been pronounced;”baloney”. In South Africa it is spelled and pronounced as “polony” as it is believed to be derived from the Polonia which is the old name for Poland. In some parts of the country it is also referred to as “jumbo”.
Bologna has been produced containing beef, pork, chicken or turkey. It is cooked as well as smoked with an array of spices giving it its unique flavor and aroma. Many meat companies have their own labels on the bologna they manufacture and it can get confusing choosing which one to purchase at the grocery store. Aside from the various name brands one can find German and Kosher bologna as well, and no two are exactly alike.
Americans consume approximately 800 million pounds or more of bologna annually!
That’s a lot of bologna!
A usual bologna sandwich is one where the bologna is placed between two fresh slices of white bread that have been spread with mayonnaise. Others may enjoy a slice or two on a hero sandwich. Then again, it is a favorite not just for lunchtimes but also for breakfast with a scrambled, fried or over-easy egg on a bun or in-between some toasted bread is to enjoy fried bologna. No matter how you slice it, fry it or add it to a sandwich today is the day to celebrate bologna.
Another way to celebrate National Bologna Day is to sing the popular song lyrics written by Christian Comedian, Mike Williams in 1973; titled “Bologna Song” that written for Oscar Mayer and their brand of bologna.
“My bologna has a first name,
My bologna has a second name,
I love to eat it every day,
And if you ask me why I’ll say,
‘Cause Oscar Mayer has a way with B-o-l-o-g-n-a!”
Happy National Bologna Day!
