For thousands of people around the country, blood donations are desperately needed. From routine surgery and cancer patients, to accident victims, the amount of blood needed varies from 2 units up to 50 units in total. Without blood donations, these people would not be able to survive. 1 unit of blood is equal to 1 donation amount. Imagine how many donations are required every day just in the city of Calgary alone.

January is National Blood Donor month and a great time to think about what you can do to help others. Many people can give blood, while others cannot. You must meet the eligibility requirements listed on the Canadian Blood Services website. The minimum interval between frequent donations is 56 days. There is also a pre-screening process each and every time you go in for a donation. If you have any questions about your eligibility be sure to contact Canadian Blood Services at 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283).

If you have never donated blood before, January is a great time to start! It is as easy as heading into your nearest Canadian Blood Services clinic in Calgary. You can search for a clinic on the Canadian Blood Services website here. It is a great feeling to know that you have helped someone in need by only taking a few moments of your time and a pint of your blood.
