The National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive is scheduled throughout the United States for this Saturday, May 10, 2014.
The mail carriers have been leaving plastic bags in mail boxes everywhere so people can fill the bags with food items to help the mail carriers reach their goal this year.

Now in its 22nd year, the Food Drive effort is the nation's largest single-day drive. In 2013, 74.4 million pounds of food was collected, which brought the grand total of donations to just under 1.3 billion pounds of food collected over the history of the drive.
With this many years passing since the Letter Carriers Food Drive began, readers might not be too surprised to learn that many families in the United States are struggling to make ends meet. According to one of the sites, paper products, personal hygiene products and supplies for babies are needed in addition to food.
Those leaving items in the plastic bags supplied by local letter carriers should be aware that canned and boxed items that are not perishable are the choices needed.
Items collected stay in the area where they are collected. All donations are given to local food pantries and soup kitchens.
