National African American History Month - Celebrate the legacy

African American History Month was first announced in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, according to Wikipedia.  At that time it was known as “Negro History Week” and 50 years later became Black History Month.  On January 31, 2012, President Barack Obama proclaimed February 2012 as National African American History Month with a theme of “Black Women in American Culture and History”. This theme recognizes the heroic and historic acts of African American women in the past and in the future.   This annual observance is celebrated to remember the accomplishments and contributions of people and events in the African diaspora.

AfricanAmericanHistoryMonth.org states that “The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society.”

In February we have an opportunity to make America a Nation where everyone is equal, not just during this month but throughout the year.
