The highly regarded Steward Speakers (formerly Steward & Associates) in Indianapolis will host three of America’s top female leaders to share their diverse expertise with audiences during the early part of 2013. CNN’s Soledad O’Brien, author, economist and scholar Dr. Julianne Malveaux, and top fitness expert Donna Richardson-Joyner will visit Indy between February and April. Each speaker in the series is required to visit a local school, participate in a media interview and provide the keynote address for a community lecture.
Donna Richardson-Joyner, fitness guru and recent ex-wife of top radio host, Tom Joyner, will appear at the Walker Theatre Center on Monday, February 4 at 7:30 pm. She served two terms on the Presidential Council for Fitness, Sports and Nutrition under President George W. Bush. She has lectured to colleges and community organizations in over 40 countries. Her goal is to reverse the obesity epidemic in America. She says, “I’m here to spread the gospel of good health, healing, hope and happiness. I hope you will join me in this movement that will not only transform bodies but transform lives.” She is a certified International Fitness Expert and was selected by The Oprah Winfrey Show as one of the "Top 5 Fitness Video Instructors". She was selected by Fitness magazine as one of their "Top 10 Movers and Shakers" and was inducted into the Fitness Hall of Fame. She has authored two books and starred in sixteen fitness videos. Her latest book, Witness to Fitness, was released in December 2012.
Founded in 1986 by Matthew Steward, also a veteran police officer, the lecture series exists to present prominent and credible African Americans to the Indy area, to foster meaningful dialogue and cultural exchange and to educate students about topics and current events relevant to their lives. Says Steward, “After graduating from IU in Bloomington where I was in a student group that helped bring top speakers to campus, I found a void when I came back home. I talked to Charles Williams, Sam Jones and Rev. Andrew J. Brown, local community leaders at the time, and they all thought the lecture series was a good idea.” His first guest speaker was Dick Gregory who attracted 1,200 guests to Clowes Hall on the Butler University campus. Harry Belafonte drew the biggest crowd in 1990 at the Circle Theater.
Steward revealed that the organization has been successful in sustaining a list of strong supporters for many years including the Lilly Endowment, U.S. Customs & Border Protection and Citizens Energy. Lumina Foundation just joined the list of supporters for 2013. They will present Soledad O’Brien on February 22. For more details visit www.stewardspeakers.com.
