This week, the nation has been in mourning over the one-year anniversary of the senseless tragedy that took place in Newtown, Connecticut.
In December 2012, 20 children and 6 adults were murdered when a crazed gunman entered the Sandy Hook Elementary School, and opened fire. Five teachers were killed, along with 20 innocent children.
The gunman, Adam Lanza, has earlier killed his mother. His mother owned a gun, which her son apparently used to kill her. Lanza turned the gun on himself, after the murders.
One year later, there are still no clear answers in the case. Perhaps no one will ever know why Adam Lanza targeted an elementary school, or why any of the innocent people killed that day lost their lives.
However, following this tragedy, nearly every one in the nation has reflected on the events, and many have an opinion on what can be done in the future to prevent such acts of violence. For many, the answer is gun control, understandably. For others, however, an argument is "Guns don't kill people, people kill people."
In the months since Sandy Hook, there have been several shootings which captured national attention, including one recent shooting at a school in Colorado.
This fact remains, however: People with guns kill people. Guns are simply an instrument of murder. No matter what arguments gun supporters have, nothing will change the fact that millions of people die each year because of gun violence- and we need to do something in this country to fix that.
