After Benson Henderson defeated Frankie Edgar at UFC 150 this past Saturday, UFC President Dana White announced that Benson Henderson will be facing Nathan Diaz next.
Though Dana did not announce when the two would fight, he did mention it would be this year, bearing there are no injuries. With the UFC having the rest of the year scheduled, it looks like the fight can only happen in the month of December.
The UFC has four events scheduled for December. There is a Fox fight, an FX Fight Night, The Ultimate Fighter finale on Fuel, and a pay per view scheduled for the end of December.
It would be highly unlikely that the UFC would have this championship fight on The Ultimate Fighter finale or an FX Fight Night. This leaves the Fox fight and the pay per view fight. The pay per view at the end of the is rumored to be a heavyweight rematch between champion Junior Dos Santos and Cain Velasquez. This leaves the Fox card as the likely candidate for Nathan Diaz vs. Benson Henderson.
The UFC on Fox card is scheduled to take place on December 8th, and looks like it will be taking place in San Jose California. Another indicator that this fight may be taking place on December 8th is that Dana White also announced that if BJ Penn faces Rory MacDonald on the Fox card it would not be the main event. Prior to White making that announcement there had been speculation that BJ Penn would be facing Rory MacDonald in the main event on the December 8th Fox fight card.
There is no doubt in my mind that the Henderson vs Diaz fight will be happening on December 8th, as long as there are no injuries.
Diaz is currently riding a three fight win streak, starting last September when he returned to the lightweight division after having a brief stint in the welterweight division. Last September Diaz submitted Takanori Gomi in the first round via an Armbar. Diaz followed up that impressive victory with a win last December over Donald Cerrone. Cerrone had been riding a six fight win streak before Diaz destroyed him in a three round nonstop battle. After beating Cerrone Diaz was granted a number one contenders matchup with Jim Miller this past May. Diaz came out and applied pressure on the UFC veteran Miller and submitted Miller in the second round via Guillotine choke. With the win over Miller Diaz has earned himself a chance against Benson Henderson.
Whether the fight between Henderson vs. Diaz happens on December 8th or not, it will be a good fight whenever it does take place. Both men are strikers with good ground game. I believe Diaz’s Jiu-Jitsu will be the difference in the fight, and Diaz could upset Henderson.
