Nate Baptist graced the open mic stage at Andy Mac’s, on Sept. 2. He performed two sets, averaging an hour each and played the guitar and harmonica.
After performing a microphone check, he mentioned it would be the last open mic of the season. After concluding his announcement, an onlooker requested him to play a song by Norah Jones. He responded by saying he did not know how to play any of her songs and began his set with a cover of Ween’s “Bananas and Blow”. During the performance, he made it up to them and incorporated Alicia Keys’ “Fallen”.
During Baptist’s cover of Dr. Hook’s “I Got Stoned and I Missed It”, he spoke as he played the guitar. He joked about searching for porcupines and baseball bats online. He went onto say he had little success of finding a porcupine. Afterwards, he declared his love for the bar but did not know any Toby Keith songs.
Gin Blossom’s “Kelli Richards”, “Hungover”, Ween’s “Help Me Scrape the Mucus off My Brain”, T-Pain’s “I’m ‘n Luv (wit a Stripper)”, “Tampons and Hot Sauce”, Social Distortion’s “Story of My Life”, Jon Lajoie’s “High as F**k”, Lil’ Wayne’s “Lollipop”, Cracker’s “Mr. Wrong” and Jerry Jeff Walker’s “Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother” were also part of Baptist’s first set.
Upon request, Baptist asked for crowd participation for Cee Lo’s “F**k You!” When it was time for everyone to shout out the title, everyone joined in. As the crowd helped finish the final chorus, a regular at the venue requested for Ween’s “Bananas and Blow”. After he said he already played it earlier, he granted the spectator’s request and performed it shortly after.
Baptist ended the evening with a request by an audience member and performed a cover of Alice in Chains’ “Nutshell”. After stating he could not hit Layne Staley’s high notes, he decided to whistle away from the microphone. After the recital, he wished everyone a good night and complimented how awesome they were.
Gin Blossoms’ “Cheatin’”, Infant Sorrow’s “Inside of You”, Muddy Waters’ “Champagne and Reefer”, Cracker’s “Something You Ain’t Got”, Frank Zappa’s “Bobby Brown Goes Down”, Lemonhead’s “The Outdoor Type”, Ben Folds’ version of “B*****s Ain’t S**t”, Dynamite Hack’s “Boyz In Da Hood”, Dr. Hook’s “Cover of the Rolling Stone”, LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know It” and Ween’s “Piss Up a Rope” were also part of Baptist’s second set.
