A Saturday crash in Westbury left two men facing drunken driving charges after they were both reportedly drunk behind the wheel when the smashup occurred, Nassau County police said.
The crash happened in the early morning hours of Aug. 31 on Merrick Avenue in Westbury. According to police, a 1993 Toyota Camry became involved in a head-on collision with a 2006 Jeep Cherokee, when the Camry’s driver veered into the opposite lane of traffic.
A 22-year-old female passenger in the Camry was seriously injured the crash. She remains hospitalized in critical condition, police said.
The diver, Elan McDonald, 25, of 1366 Balcom Avenue, Bronx, is now facing charges for second-degree assault, second-degree vehicular assault, reckless driving and driving while intoxicated.
According to police, the driver of the Jeep – Vincent Berillo, 42, of 2 Schoolhouse Road, Levittown – was also intoxicated behind the wheel. He was arrested at the scene after being observed with “glassy bloodshot eyes” and “slurred speech,” police said. Berillo was charged with driving while intoxicated and holding more than one license.
Cops said a 38-year-old man, who was a passenger in Berillo’s Jeep, was treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. His condition was not immediately known.
McDonald was admitted to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow for treatment of injuries sustained during the crash, police said. He will be arraigned “as soon as medically practical.”
Berillo appeared Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead for his arraignment. He was ordered held on $1,000 bail and remains in custody Sunday afternoon, court records show. He is due back in court again on Wednesday.
