San Antonio Scorpions announced Tuesday August 27 that Tim Hankinson has been removed as Head Coach of the NASL side after the clubs failure to gather any points in the early Fall season matches. Assistant coach, Alen Marcina, will take over as interim head coach for the rest of the 2013 NASL fall season.
After a terrible start to the 2013 spring season, Hankinson lead his side to a third placed finish but the poor start to the second half of the season was more than the Scorpions chiefs could endure.
General Manager Howard Cornfield said, "Tim is a quality coach and person, however, the team has not played to the level our organization and fans expect. Our goal is to compete for the championship and this team is far too talented to be where we are right now. We sincerely thank Tim for his help in getting Scorpions soccer off to a great start, and for his dedication to Soccer for a Cause.”
Alen Marcina commented, "Firstly I just want to thank Coach Hankinson for bringing the city of San Antonio its first regular season championship in 2012. It’s been an honor and a blessing working under Tim. Moving forward, I have an obligation to the city of San Antonio, to the staff, to the players, to Mr. Hartman and to Soccer for a Cause. I plan on leading. I’m excited for the opportunity and I plan on making the most of it."
Although Hankinson will be hurting from the parting of ways, he can take heart from the achievements he led the team to as the clubs first head coach in the organization’s history. The club also managed record attendance records in their first season whilst playing at Heroes Stadium before moving into the impressive soccer specific Toyota Field.
Outgoing coach Hamkinson said, "I want to thank Gordon Hartman of Soccer for a Cause for this opportunity to win our first cup. To the fans: Rally behind the team. You have been great!"
Talking about his interim replacement, Howard Cornfield said, "Alen has a great soccer pedigree and recognizes what a great opportunity this is for him. While we will immediately commence a worldwide search for the position of head coach, Alen will be considered for the full-time position when he and the team turn things around."
Marcina will be tested for the first time on Saturday, August 31 when his side host Minnesota United FC at Toyota Field.
