"The Brian Mason Show" to End in June
A beloved Sunday morning tradition in Nashville is coming to an end as radio personality Brian Mason has announced his decision to bring "The Brian Mason Show" to an end on Sunday, June 26, 2011. The gospel music program started as a half hour show on WSM-FM, which, at the time played mainstream, adult contemporary music. In time the show moved to WLAC-FM which is where I discovered it.
It was while listening to Mason's show in the 1980s that I first heard contemporary Christian music. It was the first time I had ever listened to Amy Grant or Michael W. Smith, and their music changed my life. Mason has given a voice to many industry legends as well as giving newcomers a chance to be heard.
However, Mason's influence was not confined to the controls at the radio station. He was a popular host and announcer at numerous music events in Nashville during his career. Going to the annual star-studded Brian Mason Christmas party was a highlight for me every Christmas during the late 1990s. More recently, Mason was on the planning committee and served as the host of the historic Koinonia Family Reunion in 2007.
Brian Mason made the announcement of his pending departure due to illness today via an email to his friends stating that June 26th would be the last broadcast of his Sunday morning radio show. He stated that he made his decision based on the effects of Meniere’s disease, a disorder of the inner ear that can affect hearing and balance.
Brian Mason has had a profound effect on gospel music and the Christian music industry. Although Christian music is heard on many gospel music radio stations in Middle Tennessee, none have had the effect of "The Brian Mason Show."
