“Nashville” was full of lies, deceit and betrayal this week as episode 2X09 “I’m Tired of Pretending” aired on Wednesday, Dec. 4 on ABC. Among the big stories was the escalating feud between Layla and Juliette; Scarlett finding out about Zoey and Gunnar and Maddie’s woes over her two daddies.
Juliette’s record label and everybody else loves Layla but Juliette sees right through her. When Layla escalates things by giving her an encore during a show and delaying Juliette’s entrance, Jules takes matters into her own hands. She flips Layla’s and Will’s sets so that Zoey is the opening act, playing to a smaller crowd. In retaliation, Layla cons Will into doing a duet the next night to get back at Juliette. When Jules learns of it, she waits till show time and takes the stage beside Will instead of Layla. Furious, Layla gets the last word by calling a tabloid and leaking the reason for the Wentworth’s divorce: Juliette Barnes.
And speaking of the Wentworth’s Charlie keeps turning up despite Juliette’s admonitions for him to go away. He tries desperately to convince her he’s in love with her but she doesn’t believe him. Finally, when she sees the announcement of his divorce on the news, she begins to take him seriously. After a conversation with Will, though, she rethinks things and tells Charlie to go back to his wife and forget about her. He seems to reluctantly agree. Neither knows what Layla has done…yet.
Maddie asks her parents for permission to take guitar lessons from Deacon. They agree but Deacon not only shows up at Maddie’s’ open mic performance but joins her on stage, Teddy has had about all he can handle. He confronts Deacon outside and the two nearly come to blows in front of Maddie. She runs off and later tells Rayna she is thinking of breaking off ties with both men. Teddy is so angry, he has Deacon kicked out of the upcoming music festival.
Avery convinces Zoey to take a road trip to visit Scarlett who is lonely and homesick. Gunnar learns that Scarlett and Avery have reconciled and he is okay with it. Zoey wants to tell Scarlett about her and Gunnar because the foursome togetherness is just weird and she thinks it’s the right thing to do. Before she can get up the nerve to do it, though, Scarlett sees Zoey and Gunnar lip locked in a hallway. When they see her, it is the pained look of betrayal they will remember as Scarlett flees.
Will hates being Layla’s fake boyfriend and ditches her after a show to get liquored up in a bar where he takes a nose dive off a bar. Brent steps in as his babysitter since Will keeps making a mess of things and he tells Will to get things straightened out with Layla, hence the aforementioned duet. Later, Will admits to Juliette that he can’t stand Layla but if she helps his career, he’s game to play along.
Lamar, who has been sitting in jail all this time, calls Rayna. He wants her to get Tandy to be a character witness at his bail hearing. Tandy says she’ll think about it and even goes to the feds to see if she can. She is having second thoughts about testifying against daddy. They remind her if she backs out of their deal, she will be prosecuted. She blows off the hearing but Rayna steps up and speaks on her father’s behalf. Lamar is denied bail anyway. When Rayna next sees Tandy, Tandy says she just needs time away from their father to wrap her head around things. Rayna buys it but we all know she will be seriously pissed when she finds out what Tandy has done.
