Admittedly, there wouldn’t be much of a show if the headliner, Rayna James (Connie Britton) couldn’t sing anymore. It was the way in which the question was answered that was exciting to watch. “Don’t Open That Door”, the fifth episode of season 2 on “Nashville” aired Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 9 p.m. and dealt with the matter poignantly.
Rayna is struggling with her voice. She is even working with a vocal therapist to help regain the timber and control she last after being intubated following her car accident. Rumors are rampant in Nashville because Rayna has made excuses to avoid having to sing publicly. Even the new chief of her record label thinks she can’t sing and he’s making her life a living hell.
Juliette lets Deacon know about Rayna and he is even more guilt-ridden than before -0 if that is even possible. He goes to see her and demands to know whether or not she can sing. It turns into a shouting match with Rayna proclaiming she doesn’t know whether she will ever sing again.
At a benefit shindig hosted to welcome big time singer Luke Wheeler to the record label, Rayna is asked to invite Juliette to the Grand Ole Opry. After Juliette’s acceptance, Luke cajoles a terrified Rayna into singing one of her classics.
Her voice tentative at first, the crowd takes her hesitancy for emotion and begins singing with her. Juliette watches from the sideline, understanding how hard this is for Rayna and knowing she’s in a rough spot. Surprisingly, it is not enjoyment we see on her face but concern. It’s nice to see these two slowly gaining a little respect for one another.
The crowd’s outpouring moves Rayna and she finally belts out the last verse, proving to all the naysayers that she is back and every bit as good as she ever was.
Elsewhere in Rayna’s life, her sister Tandy signed a plea deal granting her immunity in exchange for the evidence she provided about her father. She is also under a gag order and cannot tell Rayna anything. Rayna, meanwhile, has asked her father to invest in her new record label and help her buy her masters from Edgehill because she wants out. As the benefit plays out, Lamar is arrested and Rayna only learns of it afterward. Seems Tandy’s actions may have just cost Rayna her exit from the label as Lamar’s assets are frozen by the court.
