The No. 3 Richard Childress Racing GM Goodwrench Chevy that the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. drove to victory in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series 1995 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be fired up this weekend and driven by the legends eldest son Kerry Earnhardt at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England.

The annual Goodwood Festival of Speed, held July 2-4 held on the grounds of Goodwood House, West Sussex, England, is one of the world's premier historic race car events.

The highlight of the weekend for many will be when race cars past and present participate in both demonstration and competition runs up a nine-turn, 1.16-mile hill climb circuit.

Kerry Earnhardt will pilot the Chevy that his dad went to victory lane with in 1995 when he beat Rusty Wallace to the finish line by .37 of a second after leading the final 28 laps. The race is not only remembered for the win by NASCAR’s most popular driver, but for a four hour rain delay caused by the remnants of a tropical storm that forced TV coverage of the event to be tape delayed until the next day, setting of an angry round of fan protests.

There will be no protests this weekend however as the famous Chevy makes its appearance. This will mark the second year in a row that a black No. 3 Goodwrench Chevy has run at Goodwood; last year Earnhardt’s youngest daughter Taylor, drove the Chevy he father scored his last victory, number 76, at Talladega in October of 2000.

This year Kerry, the eldest Earnhardt sibling, will get the honor.

"It's going to be an awesome experience for me to drive the car my dad won the Brickyard 400 in," said Kerry Earnhardt. "Dad winning that race was a pretty big deal because it's such a special race. I'm honored to be driving it at all, but doing it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed makes it that much more special. Taylor (Earnhardt) drove one of Dad's cars last year at Goodwood and she told me it was a lot of fun and there were a lot of great people there."

Other NASCAR drivers scheduled to appear include Michael Waltrip and Mike Skinner, along with Leonard Wood of the legendary Wood Brothers team.

Waltrip will drive a Michael Waltrip Racing prepared NASCAR Sprint Cup car. This will mark his second overseas trip of the year; Waltrip raced a Ferrari in a sports car race in Dubai in January.

“That’s such an honor,” (to be chosen) said Waltrip. “Just about everybody in the world knows about Goodwood and the racing that goes on there. It’s another sign of NASCAR’s acceptance all around the world. The really cool part about traveling to Dubai was to have people from all over the world come up to you and ask you about something that happened in NASCAR. I was amazed how knowledgeable and up on NASCAR they were. It’s eye opening how closely they follow everything we are doing back home.”

How insulting to Dale Sr to have Kerry drive the #3. The only person that should be driving is Jeffrey Earnhardt-he at least is a racer like his grandfather.

How could Dale be insulted by having his eldest son honor him by driving that car?????

  • what? 1 year ago

I love how all you supposed 'Sr Fans' know what he'd want or be embarrassed by. Crawl back in your hole. There's nothing at all wrong with Kerry driving the car you ding dong.

BECAUSE THE #3 IS SUPPOSE TO BE RETIRED PERIOD!! JUNIORS FATHER DIED IN THAT CAR. WETHER ANYONE ELSE CARES OR NOT WHEN SOMETHING IS RETIRED THATS IT YOU DONT TOUCH IT. I NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT.

Well they'll be one more racecar short from the Childress fleet of cars LOL. This guy couldn't finish a race to save his life and nearlty bankrupted Terry Bradshaw who owned the team he drove for that he ended up selling it when Kerry drove for Supercuts. Hope Childress brings a wrecker it will end up on the back of a flat bed or hook the way Kerry drives and endup in slavage yard.
