NASCAR: Vickers survives the monster

The Chase contenders attacked the concrete at the “Monster Mile” during the AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway in the second playoff race. The high banks of the mile track have often claimed hopeful efforts. The fall race proved especially tough early for Martin Truex Jr.,Reed Sorenson during a crash that sent Joey Logano’s No. 20 Toyota tumbling over and over down the banking and across all grooves.

Logano emerged shaken, but healthy. Yet another tribute to NASCAR’s aggressive safety program that keeps the driver’s body and head securely surrounded by carbon fiber seats, secure neck devices and sturdy belts.

The battle continued with Jimmie Johnson rising to the top as he and the 48 team know well how to respond and excel. At the checkers it was a familiar 48.

Brian Vickers and the No. 83 Red Bull Toyota started the “Monster Mile” in 12th position and finished 18th surviving monster jaws or a monster stomp by the track that often beats drivers. The Dover result has Vickers 10th in the point standings and will not exclude the No. 83 from competition. It’s all about the next eight races. That slate is clean, open and ready.

Just start the engines. The chase has just begun.
