A country a capella group, Home Free Vocal Band, that won season four of NBC-TV's singing competition program, "The Sing-Off," will perform the national anthem at the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Cheez-It 355 at The Glen on Sunday, August 10. The announcement was made in a press release from Watkins Glen International (WGI) on Wednesday, August 6.
According to WGI, the Home Free Vocal Band was founded by brothers Chris and Adam Rupp during the duo's college years in the early 2000s. The group also consists of Austin Brown, Rob Lundquist, and Tim Froust.
Hailing from Minnesota, the group spent nearly a decade performing at state and local fairs, college campuses, and various other venues before receiving national attention on Season 4 of NBC’s "The Sing-Off."
Performing Nashville standards as well as pop with a country flavor, the group consists of only five voices and five microphones. Following their win of Season 4 of "The Sing-Off," Home Free toured with the "Sing-Off Tour Live!" Most recently, the group performed on August 3rd at the Boots and Hearts Festival in Ontario, Canada. On July 25, they performed "Ring of Fire," a Johnny Cash cover, with Avi Kaplan, on YouTube, a video that has yielded over 650,000 hits. Home Free will begin their nationwide tour, entitled the "Crazy Life Tour," this fall.
WGI reports that pre-race ceremonies as well as the race itself will be broadcast on ESPN-TV. Pre-race ceremonies take place at the Start/Finish line on the front stretch of the racetrack.
Watkins Glen's NASCAR weekend begins with the Bully Hill Vineyards 125 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race on Friday, August 8; followed by the Nationwide Series Zippo 200 on Saturday, August 9; and ends with the feature race, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Cheez-It™ 355 at The Glen, on Sunday, August 10.
