NASCAR Nationwide Series drivers make Super Bowl picks

Denver or Seattle? Just like most Americans, NASCAR Nationwide Series drivers have their picks for Sunday's 2014 Super Bowl between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. And just as the picks differ, so do the reasoning behind those picks.

Brendan Gaughan's family owns and operates Southpoint Casino in Las Vegas, which is also the primary sponsor on Gaughan's No. 62 car, so Gaughan's pick, to be determined later, is a business one.

"I'll work the sports book window at the South Point that morning," Gaughan said. "As soon as that ball kicks and the windows close, I'll turn around, look at our sports book director and say, 'who do I need?' So I have a very vested interest, because that could pay for a few more races or it could cost me a couple of races. . . . I stick with what the hotel needs."

For other Nationwide drivers, picks are more personal. Here are a few:

Trevor Bayne: Denver

“I am going to be testing at Talladega on Sunday but after that I am hoping to make it back to Knoxville to watch the Super Bowl. I am Peyton Manning fan because he is from Tennessee and led the Volunteers for a long time. There are a ton of bandwagon Broncos fans in Knoxville right now, mainly because of Peyton. They were all Colts fans and now they are Broncos fan. I am picking the Broncos. I don’t know if they are going to win, but I am pulling for them and I am picking them to win it.”

Ryan Reed: Denver

“I am a big NFL fan. I am a Cowboys fan from California actually. It doesn’t make a lot of sense I know, but my dad is a Cowboys fan, so I am one too. My prediction for the game is that I think it is going to be a great game. Judging by the Richard Sherman post game interview you know there is no confidence shortage with the Seahawks but I just think Peyton Manning will get it done and the Broncos will win. I think it will be a great game and Denver wins a close one. I could be wrong, but I think that is it.”

Chris Buescher: Seattle

“I am going with the Seahawks, just to be different. It seems like most people are picking Denver. I wouldn’t be willing to bet on it though. I don’t pay too close attention to the NFL, but I have paid attention to the Panthers this year and one of the crew guys on the 16 car this past year is a huge Panthers fan and he got me to come out a few times and in the process I became a bit of a fan and had a good time with it. It was unfortunate they came up a little short this year. I will definitely watch the game Sunday though, it is such a spectacle, and now I need to make sure my prediction comes true.”

Regan Smith: Denver

"I'm a huge Broncos fan so I'm excited about the Super Bowl."
