Kyle Busch, driver of the No. 18 M&M's Toyota Camry in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series, said at a news conference on Friday, August 8, that much of who wins Sunday's Cheez-It 355 at The Glen could come down to "us three trying to figure out who is going to win it." Busch spoke in the Media Center at Watkins Glen International.
The three racers are himself, the driver of car No. 2 Brad Keselowski, and the No. 9 driver, Marcos Ambrose. Busch's comments reflect his observation, "I think there's three favorites because they've been the top three guys here the last four years, three years, whatever it's been."
Indeed, those three drivers have battled at the head of the pack at Watkins Glen in the past few years. In 2013, Ambrose was running a strong race when an accident wrecked his chances, and he came in 31st. Busch and Keselowski placed first and second.
In 2012, a wild scramble in the closing lap that led the way to that race being dubbed one of the most exciting finishes in NASCAR, certainly of that season, Busch slid on oil moving out of the way for Keselowski and Ambrose to duke it out on and off the grass with Ambrose finally taking the win. In a race rain-delayed until Monday in 2011, Ambrose also took the checkered flag, with Keselowski and Busch taking second and third.
"I think you're going to see those three cars be fast," Busch said about the trio. He added, "I think you can always mix in a fourth and fifth guy depending on who those are. Some days they're different than others."
Continuing, he said, "This year obviously the 24 (Jeff Gordon) has been real stout -- maybe he can carry that on into this week." Predominantly, however, he said, "I think it's just going to be us three trying to figure out who is going to win."
The Cheez-It 355 at The Glen takes place on Sunday, August 10. The green flag drops at approximately 1:00 p.m. local time.
