NASCAR: Heluva Good pulls out of Watkins Glen

Just a few months before NASCAR was scheduled to return to the Glen this summer, its sponsor has left the track. Today, Watkins Glen International announced that Heluva Good! foods has withdrawn its backing for the NASCAR race at the Glen and also at Michigan International Speedway.

According to the Corning Leader, the move came as a surprise to WGI president, Michael Printup. He said Heluva Good! had been "a great partner." As to a back-up plan being in place in case something like this were to happen, he said such a plan was basically non-existent because the move came so unexpectedly.

The track is now actively searching for a replacement sponsor at a time when the nation's economy makes that especially difficult.  Like Heluva Good!, other companies are pulling back from major sponsorships of events, choosing instead to turn to smaller marketing campaigns.

Even so, Mr. Printup appears to be optimistic that a sponsor will be found. NASCAR is a proven draw. The other 2012 events at the track have sponsors in place and ready to go, so the track can concentrate its efforts on remedying this issue as soon as it can.

The NASCAR race at the Glen is scheduled for August 9-12, 2012.

Watkins Glen International is located in Watkins Glen, NY, 80 miles south of Rochester.
