NASCAR drivers participate in race of a different kind at Daytona

Four NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers braved near freezing temperatures Sunday morning at Daytona International Speedway to participate in a race of a different kind.

Jimmie Johnson, Michael Waltrip, Kasey Kahne and Aric Almirola joined nearly 1400 registered runners in the Daytona Beach half marathon. The field set off just before sunrise at the Speedway with temps hovering near freezing and a stiff breeze adding a wind chill factor. The 13.6 mile course took the runners from the Speedway to Daytona Beach and back.

Both Johnson and Kahne finished inside the top 10 in their respective groups.

“That was an awesome race,” Johnson said moments after finishing with a time of 1:29:48 grabbing fourth in his age group. “I’ve met my goal so I’m really excited about that. The course was really cool and there were a lot of people along the way cheering. The DJ at the bridge pumping out music and people even running in 48 gear.”

Kahne finished fourth in his age group and was fastest of the four drivers with time of 1:28:44. Almirola was 12 in his age group with a time of 1:46:35, while Walrip finished with a time of 2:07:00. The overall men’s winner was Joshua Guerrero from Daytona Beach with a time of 1:16:00. Katie Hoover from Ormond Beach won the women’s overall with a time of 1:26:18.
