Snow is forecast for today in the southern New Mexico and western Texas areas, but NASA’s Aqua satellite recently photographed snow in a desert in China also. The satellite picture from Aqua shows snow yesterday over the Taklimakan Desert in western China. The snow was the result of a storm in the area on Dec. 26. NASA says the Taklimakan Desert is one of the largest and hottest sandy deserts in the world. The Space Agency says sand can pile up to 1,000 feet high in some parts of the Chinese desert.
According to the World Weather Information Service, temperatures in the Chinese city of Xining, which is east of the Taklimakan Desert, are forecast to range from a low of around 3-5 degrees this week, to highs of 28-32 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Chinese Central Television Network, on its English-language website, is also reporting on record cold temperatures in Beijing today at http://english.cntv.cn/20130102/102916.shtml
NASA says the Aqua satellite collects information about Earth’s water cycle, “…including evaporation from the oceans, water vapor in the atmosphere, clouds, precipitation, soil moisture, sea ice, land ice, and snow cover on the land and ice.”
