NASA would like to see if water is on the moon and they plan to launch a rocket directly at it. Scientists believe the blast will break up trapped lunar ice allowing them to detect water molecules.
NASA said it will slam two spacecraft into the moon at 6:15 am EST Friday, October 9, 2009 and the broadcast will take approximately 1 and 1/2 hours. There will be a live broadcast of the LCROSS impacts on NASA TV. To view the live stream event click here
NASA describes the reasoning that future lunar explorations will be less expensive if there is no need to transport water from Earth.
The missile is expected to travel at twice the speed of a bullet and impact the south pole of the moon; and it should create a plume of debris large enough to be seen from Earth, according to the NASA website.
CNN aired a show earlier today that showed the public reaction to blasting the moon, and much of it was negative with many people saying to leave the moon alone.
