About a month ago, NASA sent two rockets aimed directly at the moon in an effort to determine if there was water on the moon, and Friday NASA announced that there is indeed water on the moon. Having knowledge that water is on the moon allows NASA to eliminate the need to carry water there, and they said they may be able to develop a lunar space station, said Anthony Colaprete, a NASA project scientist, during a NASA press conference today.
"I'm here today to tell you that indeed, yes, we found water. And we didn't find just a little bit; we found a significant amount, about a dozen, two-gallon bucketfuls,” he said as he held up several plastic containers.
The information they collected is based on preliminary from the October 9th rockets that were sent to crash into the moon, recorders collected information at that time and it has taken NASA time to sort through the information.
The cost of the mission was about $79 million mission, and they were successful in determining if there was water on the moon. But according to the press conference, it also led to discoveries in other areas that may help NASA unlock the mysteries of the solar system.
"The discovery opens a new chapter in our understanding of the moon," NASA said in a written statement before the press conference.
