NASA discovers water on the moon!

                    LCROSS probe (NASA)

NASA announced a spacecraft that purposely slammed into the moon has turned up evidence of water.

NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite probe discovered beds of water ice at the lunar south pole when it impacted the moon last month.

The LCROSS probe impacted the lunar south pole at a crater called Cabeus on Oct. 9. The $79 million spacecraft, preceded by its Centaur rocket stage, hit the lunar surface in an effort to create a debris plume that could be analyzed by scientists for signs of water ice.

Anthony Colaprete, LCROSS project scientist and principal investigator from NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California:

Indeed, yes, we found water. And we didn't find just a little bit, we found a significant amount

Scientists have long suspected that permanently shadowed craters at the south pole of the moon could be cold enough to sustain water frozen at the surface and have been analyzing a mile-high plume of debris kicked up by the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite.

(Water has already been detected on the moon by a NASA-built instrument on board India's now defunct Chandrayaan-1 probe and other spacecraft, though it was in very small amounts and bound to the dirt and dust of the lunar surface)
NASA plans to return astronauts to the moon by 2020 for extended missions on the lunar surface.

UMMM - what has this got to do with the weather? And why is it almost verbatim like the AP story written about this subject?

  • Jackson Weather Examiner 2 years ago

This story is a major break through in astronomy and weather. They discovered an ice field and or water and ice and you say what does this have to do with weather since this is space.

Saturn is known for its thunderstorms which is weather, because this is space, does not mean it is not related to weather.

I do not normally cover space news but this a major break through as I am sure everyone agrees.

And I did not get this story from the AP, if you read most of the stories relating to this discovery, most are similar.

But thanks for visiting the Jackson Weather Examiner

All this wonderful news will come in handy for the Chinese. This country will never return to the moon. We will be too broke after 2 trillion dollar annual deficits. So whatever good derives from this information will accrue to other nations, and not to us. A 79 million dollar rock thrown at the moon to find out whether there is water there. Interesting science. Idiotic spending. We should just have sent the money to Bejing and settle into the social octagenarianism to leaves the great adventure of exploring space to nation that are not delusional spendthrifts and anti-growth ninnies. next time, NASA please tell us how to go to the moon with GREEN ENERGY!

  • Mike 2 years ago

Just a thought for those who think that this was "Idiotic spending". Most of the 79 million went to our countries top scientists and engineers. The American companies who built the craft provided jobs to your friends and neighbors. These are the same people who will develop the green energy technologies of tomorrow. Space exploration will also help to inspire the young people of today.

  • Pam 2 years ago

I'm with Jackson and Mike! This is incredible stuff. I am absolutely for cure to diseases, I think we invest there too!? But we're just as likely to be destroyed by an asteroid or otherwise need to flee to space. Confirming sustainable amounts of water on the moon is as much in support of sustaining life as the homeland research. And we do employ large numbers of highly educated folks who then spend that money in our own economy. What's bad about this? Why wouldn't you find this fascinating?

Just to prove America better, you cannot lie about Nasa finding water on the moon. For your kind of Information it was INDIA who led this discovery to reality. By lieing about this, you are not proving that America is better but proving that how weak America's people are.

  • NEE 2 years ago

I can guarentee that America did not went on moon. And that too in 19th century. Not even now any country can go to moon and come back safely in 2009. Man this AMERICA and their
LIES WILL KEEP GOING ON AND ON AND ON AND ON........................

    And I AGREE WITH AVANI

I refreshed to check out the comments. You guys are hilarious! So it's a conspiracy!? Wow! Don't comment if you haven't followed what's lead up. We've been planning to slam a probe back on the surface of the moon for a while. It happened. Cool. And within a short period of time this investment as yielded results. Cool. We've broken a few. Why must people turn everything to conspiracy...us against them? By the way, India, or was it China, regardless of who's doing the research out there, we're all in this when it comes to this level of survival. The bright minds of all our great progressive nations get it which is why they give each other a high five coming and going off the space station. I bet Americans are finishing the Japanese rice from the last stock up on inventory.

$79 mil is pretty cheap by science standards, especially for a discovery with this much potential.

Avani - that was a NASA instrument, and US dollars, in the Indian probe. It's success made this test worth doing.

Yuri - take a few minutes to see how much medical and agricultural advancement has come from the space program. It will take you a lot longer for a full picture, but a few minutes will paint a good outline.

Honestly, i dont really care if they found ice on the moon or not. my oppinion is that it is a wast of time, effort and money. If they built a 'new earth' on the moon. who is wealthy enough to live there anyway. i guess if you earned $1 Billion a year you would be fine... ehem ehemm

Look ppl, all of you saying that america is weak an this and that, then why the hell are you here? take your weak as to another country that you feel is better. our great country is the best and most advanced and its awsome that we found water on the moon. im proud to be a sergeant in this great nations army. and this is coming from a hispanic/latin man, not just a red neck in the military. i love our country and i cant stand ppl putting it down. we have taken a big step forward and made history with this discovery.

It is a great thing that the Indian scientists have discovered water on moon. I hope that they succeed finding water on moon. Maybe in the future when the world will end then we can stay on moon. I am in Grade 6, living in Chiang Mai Thailand, and I am from India.

Whoah first of all the bashes on America are a little uncalled for, I dont think you can properly judge a country without actually spending some time there. I agree their government is messed up but the people are good. Secondly I agree that we should be focusing the money on more important issues. $79 billion seems like a lot of money to waste. I realize the importance of this find but I would rather spend the money on finding cures or feeding starving children.

I think the point to those who say 'wow, so what?' is that water is the key to life in the universe (at least on Earth so it's a pretty good starting point) therefore if we find water on other celestial bodies it's a good indication of other life in the universe. And it's not just an 'American' point, exploration and the thirst to expand is built into mankind (even us Brits have done a bit of that) so I'm afraid pushing the boundaries of knowledge is here to stay.

Now we know that our reedemer liveth, all of God's creation testifies that he lives yesterday, today and foever more.

great job NASA. people may look at the picture that is right in front of them and say that a bunch of money is wasted by crashing that, but nobody looks at the possible future picture of life besides our own world, and a possible future for the human race in other places besides Earth.
and Sergeant, very nice! i stand by you on that 100%. you all can be jealous of my country for doing something first. unlike most of you others posting comments, I have defended the rights of my country and its citizens, while YOU sit on your rear and have someone do just that for you.

It's very nice to know that scientists are squeezing their minds to find an alternative place to live in. But it is just waste of time and money. It should be very useful for humanity that scientists find a remedy to problems that THEY have created on earth (AIDS, Nuclear pollution, Insectside...etc. and everything science has created in the sake of human confort) then, you may talk about useful research that aim to find water on wathever planet you kike. For the moment Cancer disease in some of its types is caused by soiled water due to chimical substances. so instead of looking for water on the moon, scientists ought to be more concerned with the quality of water on earth.

Iam a nepelese citizen living in police school Sanga, kavre and I would like to congratulate those scientists who have got marvellous success in finding the vital element of life i.e. water on the surface of moon. this magnificient discovery has opened the door to the moon making it a possible place to save the human seed at the crucial time of natural calamity.
The money used for this purpose has got its best use. Money should not be used only for eating and curing purpose . this is trivial use of money. Many many congratulations once again!

Um I guess nice job?? It used to be the space program was the most expensive thing we seemed to spend out monies on... this seems pretty inexpensive compared to what we'll spend on health care... 1.5 trillon dollars..

Soyuz, Krisha and Sangita say that this is the most praise worthy and the historic discovery in the history of human beings. For this important deed the American scients have been the object of heart felt gratitude and appriciation. These scientists have written their names in the golden letters and have contributed the whole mankind for its longer existence. So God bless you guys and get further success in this endeavour. From Nepal police School ,sanga Kavre, Kathmandu, Nepal

Okay - time for some truths. Across the globe, but especially in the developed world, longevity and levels of health are at historic highs. One of the reasons for this is the efforts through science. Now, thanks to those efforts, as well as concerted efforts on the parts of some religions, we have massive population growth, putting enormous pressure on science and governments ability to sustain food, energy and disease control. Simple fact - if population was smaller, everyone would be healthier / live longer. You cant have it both ways. No one is talking about population control - why not? Science is doing the best job in spending this money to expand our chances of finding new places to live. If they were to stop and spend it all "fixing" the worlds problems, we'd have 10 billion on the planet in no time, and even worse conditions. You cant have your cake and eat it people!

Balance - There are two kinds of people in the world: The first points out problems and bring them to attention, and the latter propose solutions to those problems. As a race, we are well aware of our 'population crisis', and I assure you we are already searching for solutions. Look at the widespread birth control across the globe. This is just one sign of our attempts at controlling population.

Personally, I think we need an overhaul of our agricultural system. The way we farm is destructive and shortsighted. What I'm suggesting is food control, or using food levels to control population instead of having population control food levels. If we change food output gradually towards a neutral trend of increase, then we should be able to avoid even one person (that isn't already in a resource-depleted situation)from starving.

Besides, any anthropologist would agree that fear of societal collapse has brought more destruction and chaos then actual societal collapse. Don't worry about i

Water on the moon... I wonder if it has the same percentage of oxygen, nitrogen, argon, etc as earth water does?

  • bryan 2 years ago

i have a question... that would prove that the moon comes out from the earth right? they say that when the earth was cooling down wiel spining somo parts from the earth separated and formed the moon thats a theaory sins they found out that the moon each time a year pases the moon moves 1 inch so if you go back the years the moon is practicly touching the earth so can that prove that the mon comes out from the earth???

  • Kasey 2 years ago

Oh, this is awesome! It's really amazing there is water somewhere else other than Earth. I agree that we really need to focus our time on the sick and hungry, but we shouldn't confine all of our money and energy to /just/ the sick and hungry. We need to balance it out. Soon we might not have much room left on Earth. So what's the harm searching for other planets we can live on? I think it's pretty cool. (:

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was[a] on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.
6 Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” 7 Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.
9 Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth, a
