Legendary hip-hop veteran Nas is set to kick off his North American Fall Tour on October 2, 2014 in Rochester, NY, in conjunction with special screenings of the documentary film Nas: Time is Illmatic. The tour and film screenings are in celebration of the 20th anniversary of his landmark debut, Illmatic. Each film screening on the tour will be followed by Nas performing "Illmatic" from start to finish. The tour will arrive at the local Keswick Theatre on October 5, with tickets on sale beginning Friday, August 15.
"Nas: Time is Illmatic" chronicles Nas' influences and the impossible challenges he faced while creating "Illmatic," considered by many to be the greatest work from hip-hop's second golden era. The documentary is directed by multimedia artist, One9, written by Erik Parker, and produced by One9, Parker, and Anthony Saleh. "When we started this project, Erik Parker and I couldn't imagine that audiences would one day be able to experience the film with a live performance of "Illmatic," the album that started it all. It will make each night a truly special moment for the culture. We are sure people of all generations will be inspired by the story of Nas, the Jones family, and electrified by a live performance," said One9.
A New York native, Nas hails from the Queensbridge neighborhood of Long Island City, a known hub for rap artists since the 1980s. Influenced early on by music, he is the son of jazz trumpeter Olu Dara, he has successfully gone on to sell over 20 million albums worldwide over the span of his career, and has acted as an ambassador for hip-hop culture throughout the world. Since the debut of "Illmatic," he has released nine solo albums and three compilations, all of which have been certified double-platinum, platinum and gold.
Nas released a special 20th anniversary edition of "Illmatic," entitled Illmatic XX, that is available currently for download on iTunes. Before "Illmatic XX," his most recent release was 2012's Life Is Good, which debuted at number one on the Billboard Top 200, marking the sixth number one album that he produced.
