Although Judge Andrew Napolitano's excellent program, Freedom Watch, has been cancelled at Fox Business Network, the Judge did not "go gentle into that good night." Napolitano took the opportunity to "set the record straight" concerning a few misperceptions about Ron Paul during one of his last shows.
An ardent Ron Paul supporter, Napolitano has been mentioned by some Constitutionalist Republicans as a possible candidate for President.
Mike Ridgway at Republicans Elect says that Napolitano would actually make a much better candidate for the Constitutional cause than Dr. Paul.
Nonetheless, Napolitano addressed some of the concerns conservatives have about Dr. Paul's statements on Israel, the so called 'Palestinians,' Iran, and other issues involving the Middle East which have been easily misconstrued.
The centerpiece of Napolitano's defense of Dr. Paul revolves around the Congressman's public support for Israel when it bombed an Iraqi nuclear reactor in the early 1980s.
Dr. Paul's rationale for such vocal support for Israel is his firmly held belief in national sovereignty, that nations have a fundamental right to do what they must to protect themselves from real threats to their security and existence.
Many critics have pointed to Dr. Paul's strongly worded condemnation of any suggestion that the United States bomb Iran to prevent it from developing nukes as some sort of proof that the Congressman is anti-Semitic or that he wishes to make Israel vulnerable to the desires of Islamic extremists in the region to wipe the Jewish state off the map.
But Dr. Paul never suggested that Israel does not have the right or the rationale for taking out Iran's nuclear reactors. As a sovereign nation they most certainly do. Iran has repeatedly called for the complete destruction of Israel. But that does not mean the United States should be involved.
And this is precisely Napolitano's point. Had the United States kept its nose out of the business of other nations through the years, Israel would have taken care of all of the threats coming from the oceans of Islamic extremists that surround it. Not only would Iraq and Iran not even be a blip on the radar screen today, but Syria would be no issue at all right now in the Middle East. Israel would have resoundingly defanged each of these threats long ago.
Israel has always had and continues to have the means and the will to adequately and effectively deal with its own national defense without U.S. interference in any way whatsoever.
And in Dr. Paul's view, meddling in a nation's internal affairs with regard to its own defense is a direct violation of our own Constitution that affirms the principle of national sovereignty. As a sovereign nation we believe that we have the ultimate authority to determine our own course of action in face of threats. That belief extends to other nations as well.
