Naples weekend win ensures the club a slot in FRU Cup Final

The Naples Hammerheads defeated the Boca Raton Buccaneers 32 to 21 Saturday afternoon in Estero, Fla. to guarantee Naples a spot in the Florida Rugby Union (FRU) Division II Cup Final on Saturday, March 30.

The Hammerheads also learned the club will host a home match in the first round of the USA Rugby South Division II Championship.

Hammerhead rugger Kenneth Dunne summarizes scoring for the match

Kenneth Dunne, Treasurer for the Naples Hammerheads, spoke with the Tampa Bay Rugby Examiner on Sunday to summarize the scoring in Saturday’s match against Boca Raton:

They went up 7-0 early, but it was mostly us after that. They scored a late try in injury time to end the game, after numerous penalty calls against us near the try line.

The scoring went (Naples to Boca Raton) 0 to 7, 7 to 7, 10 to 7, 15 to 7, and 22 to 7 at the half. During the second half, the scoring was 27 to 7, 27 to 14, 32 to 14, and finally 32 to 21 to finish the game.

The Hammerheads earned their 32 points with five tries, two conversions, and one penalty kick. Meanwhile, Boca Raton relied on three tries and three penalty kicks to reach its total of 21 points.

Naples guaranteed spot in playoffs

Saturday’s win over the Boca Raton Buccaneers guarantees the Naples Hammerheads a slot in the FRU Cup Finals Match, scheduled for Saturday, March 30.

While the details are yet to be set in stone, Kenneth Dunne believes his club is likely to host either the “B” side of the Atlanta Renegades or the Charleston Outlaws in the opening round on the USA Rugby South Division II Playoffs in early April.
