The Naples Hammerheads Rugby Football Club (RFC) took the top seed in the Southern Division of the Florida Rugby Union (FRU) on Saturday with a 34 to 10 victory over the Miami Tridents RFC at Ben Franklin Park in Miami, Fla.
Hammerheads treasurer Kenneth Dunne shared the following post-match commentary about his club's win over the Tridents with the Tampa Bay Rugby Examiner:
This was a grudge match. League play in the FRU South division was completed today with a 34 to 10 victory for Naples Hammerheads RFC over Miami Tridents RFC, 34 to 10. The Tridents had handed Naples their lone loss earlier this season, 22 to 5, in a virtual monsoon in Estero, FL.
This time, the storm was within each and every Hammerhead. The result was a convincing victory for the visitors. Naples tries were scored by Johnny Lindsey, Gene Ethcheverry (two), Ryan Shore (two) and Walter Gutierrez.
The Hammerheads scored six tries and two conversions to earn their 34 points, and limited the Tridents to one try, one conversion and one penalty kick for their total of 10 points. This win improves Naples’ record to 7-1-0 heading into crossover play in two weeks. The Tridents fall to 4-4-0.
When the points are calculated as put in place by the FRU, Naples finishes with 43 points in regional play, and on top in the south. The Tridents finish with 28 points, or in third place in the south.
Buccaneers beat Knights in Fort Lauderdale
The other match played in the Southern Division of the FRU took place between the Boca Raton Buccaneers RFC and the Fort Lauderdale Knights RFC Saturday afternoon at Mills Ponds Park in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In this match, the Buccaneers defeated the Knights by a score of 17 to 3.
In this match, Boca Raton scored three tries and one conversion to reach 17 points, and limited Fort Lauderdale to only one penalty kick and three points for the match.
After wrapping up regional play, Boca Raton heads into crossover play with a 6-2-0 record and 39 points, which places the club second in the Southern Division of the FRU. Fort Lauderdale’s record falls to 3-5-0 and 25 points. This leaves the club in fourth place in the south.
