The canals in the Naples area of Long Beach have long provided a scenic spot for Long Beach residents with Christmas lights and boat parades. Throughout the year visitors can be seen kayaking and through the canals that are lined with million dollar homes. However those canal seawalls are falling apart and some areas are in especially great danger of collapse.
According to a report from the Long Beach Department of Public Works, there are two choices: a short term $2,000,000 fix which will repair only the most severely damaged areas and extend the life of the wall from another 5-10 years or a long term solution which could cost $9,000,000. With resources at the city low it may be a struggle to come up with a solution, but with each earthquake comes new fears. The cost to replace the complete seawall in Naples would cost $60,000,000.
