A drive across alligator alley through the Everglades is well worth the time to reach a spectaular new botanical garden. The Naples Botanical Garden took many years of planning before they even broke ground. Each garden within the garden has a theme.
Mary and Stephen B. Smith River of Grass garden is a wetlands garden and bird watching area that successfully replicates the Everglades. The goal of this garden design is to attract birds and wildlife and educate on the necessity of preservation. The Collier Enterprises South Wetland Preserve continues the preservation goals of these natural areas that have been destroyed due to overdevelopment of South Florida. The Vicky C. And David Byron Smith Children’s Garden is designed to engage children as they play and learn at the same time. There is even a miniature demonstration vegetable and herb garden. Adjacent to the children’s garden is the lovely Pfeffer-Beach Butterfly house. The Roberto Berle Marx garden of Brazil is a loving dedication landscape architect by Raymond Jungles, who was his mentor. Perched atop a created hill rests a beautiful mural created by Marx , with cascading water floating down retention ponds . The Kapnick Caribbean garden takes you away to the steel drums and sweet fruits of the tropical islands. Tropical fruits abound here, along with coconut trees swaying in the breeze. TheBuchler Family Foundation Enabling Garden had some raised beds, a shaded work station and some potting benches. This garden displays adaptive tools to garden for those who have physical challenges. The profession known as Horticulture Therapy utilizes such garden techniques. The Marcia and L. Bates Lea Asian Garden takes you to the wonderful gardens and culture of the tropical far east.The Vicky and David B. Smith Florida Uplands Preserve was created to exemplify Florida native plants that attract birds, butterflies and wildlife.There is also a majestic water garden, featuring beautiful flowering water lilies, cannas, and grasses.
It was a treat viewing the gardens in their infancy. The newly planted gardens are already a delight to visit.
