The Naples Art Association is seeking photo submissions for its second annual Camera USA: National Photography Exhibition.
A maximum of 50 photographs will be included in the exhibition, and a $5,000 grand prize will be awarded to the photographer with the top picture during a preview reception that has been scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 1.
The photographs to be included in the exhibition and the award winner will be selected by Bradly Treadaway of the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York. Treadaway is a faculty member and the digital media coordinator for ICP. A Fulbright Scholar to Italy, he has exhibited his work in eleven countries.
Founded in 1974, the ICP is a photography museum, school, and research center in midtown Manhattan. The ICP serves more than 5,000 students each year and is one of the world's most extensive and best-equipped schools of photography. Public programs at the ICP address issues in photography and its relationship to art, culture and society.
Last year, a black-and-white photograph by David Wensel of Geneva, Illinois was selected as the top image. Titled Resting Fiona, the photograph featured a curly-haired white dog resting on a wrinkled white comforter. "Besides the obvious attributes of being well-composed and having an interesting textural quality, it was an amusing and intelligent photograph," said last year's judge, Harry Benson. "It was straightforward and immediately caught my eye and stopped me from flipping through the entries. A good photograph is one you stop and look at before turning the page."
Benson rose to prominence in 1964, when he came to America with the Beatles to document their first U.S. tour. Benson went on to photograph some of the most memorable moments occurring during the last 50 years, including the Bealtes third U.S. tour, Richard Nixon's resignation, Bobby Kennedy's assassination, Dr. Martin Luther King's funeral, the erection and the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Artists wishing to enter the competition must apply online at www.juriedartservices.com by March 22, 2012 and will only be permitted to submit one (1) photograph, which must have taken inside the USA after January 1, 2010. The entry fee is $32 ($27 for current Naples Art Association members), and entrants who are juried into the exhibition will be notified of the judge's decision on April 19. Artists may call Curator Jack O'Brien at (239) 262-6517 ext. 106 for additional information. Complete details are available by clicking this link.
