Napa Valley the place to be President's Day weekend

More so than in any recent year, I am in the throes of full-time spring fever.
Part of that passion is rooted in the weather, which has been insanely beautiful. Yes, I know we need the rain and the skiers out there are certainly frustrated but the fact that I wore shorts to a Super Bowl party makes me very happy.
I want more. I want to get away for a weekend somewhere, maybe sip some wine amid the rolling hills or gaze placidly upon the thundering Pacific, soaking up the sun at every turn. Escape, I say, escape at least for a few days the work, the phone, the computer, the commute and the connections. And, if I may, revel in the reality that my friends in colder climes won’t see the equivalent weather for another two months.
And let’s throw in some great jazz too.
If that equation appeals as much to you as it does to me, Napa is the place to be next weekend. The destination, of course, speaks for itself, whether you’re into the world-class wines, great food, stunning scenery, top spas or the array of outdoors activities.
As for jazz, the Wine Country boasts an impressive triple bill over the long President’s Day weekend.
On February 17, the Napa Valley Opera House hosts Regina Carter. A blazing blend of jazz smarts and barely bridled musical passion, the Detroit-born violinist-composer is a compelling live performer.
For the Saturday, February 18, the focus shifts to Oakville’s Miner Family Winery. The vintner is hosting its annual Winemaker's Dinner and Concert. The former is a four-course affair, while the latter features fusion pioneer Bob James and guitarist Howard Paul. Great double (or would that be triple?) bill.
It’s back to Napa proper for February 19. The Napa Valley Jazz Society is presenting Kim Prevost and Bill Solley that afternoon at Silo’s. Ticket discounts are available for NVJS members.
