Career of Naomi Wolf
By the early 1990s Naomi Wolf had achieved the position of spokesperson for third wave feminism. She had just written her international bestseller The Beauty Myth. Basically the book presents that beauty is just a social construct created by men to maintain their dominance and power over women. This idea of beauty is carried over to work, school, family, economics.
Naomi Wolf feels that women should have the right to decide if they want to wear makeup or not. This should never be a requirement for status in society. She also says the “iron-maiden” concept is just a myth and like beauty it is unattainable.
Naomi Wolf criticizes the second wave feminists who concentrated on making power and status in a man’s world the ultimate goal. Wolf maintains that now that we have achieved these goals we have paid the price psychologically and emotionally. There are more cases of plastic surgery and eating disorders on the rise because of it. She states that women often quote that their biggest goal is to lose 15 pounds. She goes on to say, “More women have more money and power and scope and legal recognition than we have ever had before; but in terms of how we feel about ourselves physically, we may actually be worse off than our unliberated grandmothers.”
