Naomi Campbell dishes on ‘The Face’ and that infamous cell phone incident

Supermodel Naomi Campbell talks to ELLE about everything from her infamous cell phone incident to her new reality television show, ‘The Face.’ She may be promoting her new show, but can Campbell really run away from that cell phone drama?

Probably not.

In a Jan. 9 ELLE report, even interviewer Mickey Rapkin cautiously noted, “her cell phone was stashed safely in her bag. Though, for a second, when I asked about her history of misbehavior, I wondered whether it would stay there.” “I’m never gonna get away from it. It’s part of my history. I was remorseful and regretful. I’ve served. I did that time and I never want to be in that position again,” the supermodel says in the February issue of the magazine.

Cell phone incident aside, Campbell is now focused on her soon-to-be hit reality show on the Oxygen network. On the show, Campbell, Karolina Kurkova and Coco Rocha each handpick aspiring models for teams that compete with each other for the show’s top prize, a cosmetics contract. According to ELLE, 'The Face' is a combination of America’s Next Top Model and the Voice; a formula that Campbell is hoping works.

“I’ve always been very shy of doing television,” she tells the magazine. “I’ve always said no. Not to be disrespectful to anyone—I didn’t want to say yes and then let people down.” So what made her take the reality television leap? The mentorship component. “I care for my girls. Every single one of them. I’m not here to put anyone down.”

When asked how ‘The Face’ compares to other shows, Campbell said, “I don’t watch the other reality model shows. I’ll never have anything to say. If you ask me about Tyra Banks I’m proud of her as a woman of color. She’s given girls opportunity, and God bless her.”

Oxygen network executives are banking on Campbell. “The first time I saw her cry in an elimination I thought, She’s in this,” says Rod Aissa, Oxygen Media’s senior vice president. “The public will see the Naomi that her friends know. That doesn’t come across in a picture, but it does come across on television.”

The February issue of ELLE hits stands on Jan. 15. ‘The Face’ premieres on the Oxygen network on Feb. 12 at 9pm ET/PT.
