On Thursday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters at her weekly press conference that July 4 is also a day to celebrate the massive 2,000 page law known as Obamacare, the Washington Examiner reported.
“Next week, when we celebrate Independence Day we’ll also be observing health independence,” she said, explaining that “this week marks one year since the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act."
Pelosi also claimed the law "captures the spirit of our founders," citing the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence.
”So, we’ve had Social Security, Medicare, and now health independence, so that’s something our members will take home to celebrate over this Independence Day," she added.
While Pelosi and her fellow Democrats may celebrate the law, the Weekly Standard said last week that Obamacare is now less popular than it has been at any time since October 2011, citing the June Kaiser Health Tracking poll.
According to that poll, 43 percent view the law unfavorably compared to 35 percent who support it. Eight percent say the law does not go far enough, while 33 percent says it goes too far.
A number of conservatives panned Pelosi's comments.
"Health independence? Funny how the Democrats define 'health independence' as dependence on the government," said a post at the Independent Journal Review, while a post at Weasel Zippers called Pelosi "insane."
Pelosi also used the press conference to bash Republicans for sequester cuts proposed by the administration.
“If Paul Revere were here today, we would need someone like him to be running through the street saying, ‘Sequester is coming,’” she said. "This is very fundamentally important to the success of our country, to the survival of many here, to the strength of our military as well as to the success of our economy.”
