Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California yesterday encouraged Democratic candidates in the upcoming 2014 fall mid-term election to run toward the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and not away from it. She also wanted to correct the record on the name of the law.
Pelosi is putting Republicans on notice that Democrats are not afraid of running on the Affordable Care Act.
Pelosi argues that the health care law is a "winner" for Democrats, when she was asked whether it’s a winning or losing issue for Democrats in swing districts this year. "You’ll have to ask the member, but I believe it’s a winner," said Pelosi at a press conference yesterday marking the fourth anniversary of the law’s passage this coming Sunday.
She also corrected a reporter who called the Affordable Care Act "Obamacare."
"And by the way, it’s called the Affordable Care Act," she scolded a reporter. "I know you didn’t intend anything derogatory, but it’s called the Affordable Care Act. I tell [Obama] the same thing I told you. Affordable — there’s a reason."
"Affordable. Affordable," said Pelosi repeatedly. "There's a reason. Affordable. Affordable. Affordable. Affordable. Affordable."
Pelosi also emphasized that health law’s name, the Affordable Care Act, is important because it describes what the law will do: lower costs. She said opponents started using "Obamacare" because they “wanted to get away from the word 'affordable,'" she added.
Pelosi also emphasized that Republicans have ignored one big issue: "Jobs."
"Fifty-one times the Republicans have voted to repeal this freedom and opportunity for the American people," Pelosi said. "These ceaseless Republican votes are not only a waste of time, they have a real and heavy opportunity cost, time wasted on partisan antics that should have been spent instead of the top -- our top priority, and a top priority of the American people, creating jobs."
Pelosi maintained that the Florida House special election last week, in which Democrat Alex Sink was defeated by a Republican in a race where the health care law was a major issue, showed that Democrats are "ready for the next putt" because the final results were close.
