Names of God: Adonai, YHWH

Is Jesus Christ Lord of your life? When someone is your lord, he or she rules over you. In other words, that person is your master. Once Jesus becomes your Lord, you concur with the teachings of the Bible and commence to living for him forever.

In my previous articles, you learned about some of the names of God in the Bible. Adonai and YHWH are the next two names of God. Adonai, which means Lord, was used instead of YHWH because the Jews believed YHWH was too hallowed for sinful people to utter. YHWH is also known as the tetragrammaton.

Adonai

In Genesis 15:2, Abraham uses the word Adonai when he says, “Lord God…” Then in Deuteronomy 10:17, the passage states, “For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe.” Romans 10:9 also uses the word Adonai. The text reads, “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

When you see the word Adonai, meaning Lord, think of Master. Acknowledge God and ask him to lead you. However, you have to humble yourself and allow him to rule over you. Saints, what is difficult in allowing the King of kings rule over you? He has great plans to prosper us, not to obliterate us.

YHWH

YHWH speaks of God’s self-existence. Deuteronomy 6:3 states, “I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name Lord I was not known to them.” Then Exodus 6:4 reads, “And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name Jehovah was I not known to them.” Also, Exodus 3:14 explains that God told Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” Isn’t it wonderful to know that God’s majestic presence is available to all who call upon him?

Final thought

God is so powerful that his name, YHWH, was not expressed by the Jews because of its sacredness. We are serving a powerful God and should find no difficulty in submitting to his perfect will for our lives.

Prayer: YHWH (YAHWEY), I worship you. Adonai, I surrender my life to you. Your Word says, “I AM WHO I AM,” and I agree. You are the self-existent God. You are loving me, protecting me, and guiding me. Thank you God. There is nothing too complicated for you. You are glorious, majestic, holy, faithful, and true. You are with me right now because you are omnipresent and omnipotent (El-Shaddai). You are my Adonai. You are my YHWH. In Jesus name, Amen.
